Start with the real number
A new Herbag Zip from Hermès runs in the low-to-mid thousands of dollars, and the exact figure moves with the trim, the size and the year. Resale sits close to that, sometimes above it, because the bag holds value. Keep that number in your head while you read replica listings. It explains the whole market, and it is the number every listing is quietly comparing itself to.
Why replica prices swing from $80 to $900
No two sellers quote the same figure, and there is no reference price the way there is for a real bag. Three things drive the spread: the trim (coated split leather versus something closer to full grain), the hardware (plated pot metal versus solid brass), and who is actually selling. A factory, a reseller, and a dropshipper working from a downloaded photo all post different numbers for what looks like the same bag on your screen.
The top of that range buys better materials. It does not buy a Hermès bag, and it never will. If a listing claims otherwise, you have learned something about the seller.
The part the listing leaves out
Counterfeit goods get seized at the US border, and trafficking in them is a federal offense, so the seller carries risk and you carry the loss. Payment is usually a transfer or a friend-and-family style method, which means no chargeback when the bag arrives with wrong stitching or does not arrive at all. Returns are rare. Sizing is guesswork. My honest read: the price gap is real, but so is the fact that you are paying for someone else's logo, and the recourse if it goes wrong is close to zero.
How to read a listing before you send money
- Reverse-image search the photos. Stock shots reused across ten shops means nobody there owns the bag.
- Check whether the seller accepts a method with buyer protection. Refusal tells you plenty.
- Ask for a photo of the actual unit with a dated note. Silence is an answer.
- Compare the quoted price against the real retail figure. A number that seems too good usually is.
If it is the canvas-and-leather tote shape you want, plenty of legal bags do that job for a few hundred dollars, and they come with a warranty and a return window.
