Short answer

The Hermès Caban is a small flap shoulder bag, and small bags are unforgiving. There is less surface area to hide sloppy edge paint, and the hardware sits right at eye level when you carry it. A replica worth owning usually costs $200 to $450. Below that you are buying a shape, not a bag. Above it you are paying for leather and finishing that you can actually feel.

One thing matters more than price: the Caban is a low-volume model compared with a Birkin or Kelly. Fewer reference photos exist, so sellers improvise. Ask for measurements and a straight-on front photo before anything else.

What the Caban actually is

It is a compact flap bag with a rectangular body, a single front flap, and an adjustable shoulder strap. Hermès has run it in several leathers across seasons, and proportions shift, so a listing that quotes one fixed size for every version is a warning sign. Match your seller's photos against a real reference of the same year, not against a stock image.

Because the silhouette is plain, everything rides on execution. There is no slouch or hardware clutter to distract the eye.

The three tiers you will see

  • Budget ($80 to $150): PU-coated split leather, stamped hardware, painted edges that crack within months. Skip it.
  • Mid ($180 to $300): Real cowhide or a corrected-grain calf, decent turnlock weight, machine stitching that is even but flat. Wearable, and honest for the money.
  • Top ($350 to $500): Full-grain or embossed calf close to Epsom in hand, hand-finished edges, hardware with correct heft and a clean engraving. This is the tier where the bag reads correctly at arm's length.

What I check first

  1. Edge paint. It should be thin, even, and bonded to the leather. Thick glossy paint is the fastest tell.
  2. Stitching. Slight angle, consistent spacing, no skipped stitches at the flap curve. The curve is where factories cut corners.
  3. Hardware. Heavy for its size, cool to the touch, engraving crisp rather than dot-matrix blurry. Rattle means cheap plating.
  4. Strap and attachments. The bag should hang straight when you lift it by the strap. If it lists to one side, the hardware is mismatched.
  5. Interior. Clean lining seams, a stamp that sits level, no glue smell. Glue smell does not fade.

Red flags

Stock photos only. No measurement photos. A seller who cannot show the flap edge from two inches away. Prices that undercut the mid tier by half. And any listing that promises "1:1" without showing stitching, because the claim costs nothing and the photo does not.

Price and care reality

Set aside $20 for a neutral cream and a soft cloth. Calf takes scuffs, and a small bag gets knocked around. Condition it lightly every few months, keep it out of direct sun, and store it stuffed so the flap does not crease. A $300 replica cared for properly looks better at year three than a $150 one did on day one.

Also know the law where you live. Selling counterfeit goods is illegal in the US, and importing them carries seizure risk. Buy with that in mind.
