What the Plume PM is
Hermès added the Plume to its line in the 1960s as a light travel bag. The PM is the smallest size. Hermès changes leathers and specs by season, so check the current spec sheet on hermes.com before you compare. Sizes differ by year.
Six checks that separate a real Plume PM from a copy
- Stitching. Hermès sews by hand with two needles and one waxed thread. The stitch row sits at a slight angle and stays even across the whole bag. A machine lockstitch runs straight and tight and shows a flat top thread.
- Date stamp. Hermès changed its date code in 2015. Older codes use a letter inside a circle or square. Codes from 2015 onward use a letter with no shape, plus a craftsperson number. Many fakes carry an old code on a bag made last year.
- Hardware. Hermès uses plated brass and palladium. Engraving depth and letter spacing match across all parts. Copy hardware feels light in the hand and the plating wears at corners and edges.
- Edges. Hermès paints and burnishes leather edges in thin layers. Edges look sealed, not coated. Copies show a thick plastic bead that peels.
- Zipper and flap line. The teeth run level and the pull sits flat against the leather. A wavy run points to a copy.
- Paperwork and channel. Hermès does not sell through marketplaces or discount sites. A receipt from a third-party seller proves a sale, not a Hermès bag.
Price gap test
Price is the fastest filter. A Plume PM in calfskin lists above $5,000 at retail and holds value on the resale market. A seller who offers a new Plume PM at $300 and calls the low price a factory direct deal is selling a counterfeit. Hermès does not run factory outlets.
Legal status in the United States
18 U.S.C. § 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. Penalties reach 10 years in prison for a first offense and 20 years for a repeat offense, plus fines. US Customs and Border Protection seizes and destroys counterfeit handbags at the border, including single bags brought in for personal use. Hermès will not repair, service, or authenticate a counterfeit bag.

Authentication limits
Hermès boutiques do not authenticate bags for third parties. Paid authentication services vary in skill with the Plume, which is a low-volume model. Photographs of stamps and hardware help, but a hands-on inspection is stronger. If a seller refuses a return window, walk away.
