Hermes Lindy Used: Fake vs Original

The Lindy is one of the most copied Hermes shapes because the slouch hides construction shortcuts. A used Lindy comes down to six hard points: heat stamp, blind stamp, hardware engraving, leather grain, stitching, and base weight. Work through the list in order and stop at the first failure.

Before You Start

  • Ask the seller for daylight photos of the front stamp, the interior pocket stamp, both zipper pulls, the feet, and the strap glazing.
  • Place the bag on a flat table under natural light, not warm indoor light.
  • Have the box, dust bag, rain cover, and receipt on hand for cross-check.

Step-by-Step Authentication

  1. Read the front heat stamp. The stamp reads HERMÈS PARIS with the accent over the E, centered and level. Letters are pressed into the leather in gold foil, not printed on the surface. Compare letter height across the whole stamp; a fake shows uneven spacing or drops the accent.
  2. Find the blind stamp inside. Open the interior and locate the small stamp in the pocket seam. It carries a craftsman code and a year letter, heat-pressed with sharp edges and no ink halo. A smudged, glued, or missing stamp ends the inspection.
  3. Inspect the zipper and hardware engraving. Both pulls should feel heavy, close with a firm snap, and carry a clean engraving on the underside. Run a thumbnail across the engraving: stamped lettering sits below the surface with crisp walls, while laser etching feels flat and shallow.
  4. Test the leather. Clemence has a matte, pebbled surface with soft drape; Swift is smooth with a light sheen. Press a panel between two fingers. Original leather wrinkles, recovers, and smells like hide. A coated plastic feel or a sharp chemical smell points to a fake.
  5. Measure the stitching. Saddle stitching runs at an angle on both faces of the seam with even tension and no skipped or doubled stitches. Count stitches over 2.5 cm (1 inch). An even count along an angled line is original work; a flat machine line with mixed stitch lengths is not.
  6. Weigh the bag and check the base. A Lindy 26, 30, or 34 has metal feet and a base that sits flat. Compare the listed weight for that size against a kitchen scale. A fake runs light because the hardware is hollow.

Red Flags That End the Deal

  • Seller will not photograph the blind stamp or the underside of a zipper pull.
  • Strap glazing is thick, wavy, or spills over the edge.
  • Dust bag logo sits in the wrong font, or the box is high-gloss.
  • The same code appears on several listings from one seller.
  • Price sits far under resale for that size and leather.

What to Do With the Result

Two checks carry the most weight: the blind stamp and the hardware engraving. Copies reproduce the front stamp well and fail inside the bag. If the Lindy clears all six checks, book a paid third-party authentication before you send money. If it fails one, walk away.
