How to Spot a Fake Hermès Herbag
The first check is the leather flap. Real Herbags carry a crisp, shallow heat stamp: HERMÈS PARIS MADE IN FRANCE. Fake stamps look raised, filled, or off-center. The second check is the touret turn-lock. A real lock turns with a short, firm throw and lines up with the leather tab.
No single detail proves a bag is real. Confirm three points or more, or send photos to an authenticator.
What the Herbag Is
Hermès launched the Herbag in 1998 as a lower-priced entry into the line. The body is coated canvas, and the flap, handles, and trim are leather, in most years Vache Hunter. Common sizes: Herbag 31, Herbag 39, Herbag Zip 31, Herbag Zip 39. The Zip version adds a rear zip pocket and a detachable zip pouch.
Some listings call a leather-bodied bag a Herbag. That is a naming error or a fake. Production Herbags use canvas.
Heat Stamp and Flap Leather
- Letters sit in one line, with equal spacing, cut into the leather.
- Grain on the flap is tight and random. Copies use split leather with a printed grain that repeats.
- Stamp placement moved between years. Compare against a bag from the same year, not a photo found online.
Turn-Lock and Hardware
Palladium hardware has a cool gray tone. Chrome-plated copies look blue-white in daylight. Feel the weight: the touret should feel dense for its size. Check the plate edges for file marks or plating bubbles. Engraving depth changes by year, so treat light engraving on its own as weak evidence.
Canvas and Stitching
Toile H shows a visible weave with steady thread thickness. Copies show wavy weft rows, loose threads at cut edges, and a plastic sheen. Hermès saddle stitching uses two needles and one thread, so the slant of the stitches leans one way on the front and the other way on the back. Machine stitching runs flat and straight on both sides.
Not every seam on a Herbag is hand-sewn. Ask a specialist before you reject a bag on stitch angle alone.
Detachable Body and Strap
The canvas body separates from the leather frame, and the leather sleeve slides out. On a fake this joint is stitched shut or glued, so the body will not come apart. The shoulder strap and the zip pouch on Herbag Zip models should fit without force and match the leather of the flap.
Blind Stamp and Year Code
Hermès marks bags with a blind stamp: a letter inside a shape for the year, plus a craftsman code. Herbag stamp placement changes by production year, and bags from before 2000 vary. A missing stamp is a signal, not proof. Ask the seller for a photo of the stamp before you pay.
Price Signals
Herbag resale sits in the low four figures, well under Birkin and Kelly. A "new" Herbag at $400 to $700 is a replica. A seller who will not send close-ups of the stamp, the lock, and the flap is a risk.
Verification
Paid services such as Entrupy and Real Authentication review photos or in-hand items. Hermès boutiques do not authenticate and do not repair bags bought outside the brand. For a high-value purchase, buy from a consignment house with its own authentication team and a return window.
