The model name is Speedy 35, not Speed 35. Louis Vuitton has never sold a "Speed" bag. A listing that spells it "Speed 35" is a first signal.

To check a Speedy 35, look at four things. One: the date code or RFID chip inside. Two: the heat stamp on the leather tab. Three: the brass hardware and its engraving. Four: the canvas, the vachetta handles and the stitch lines. A bag that fails two of these four checks is a counterfeit.

1. Date code or RFID chip

Louis Vuitton used date codes from 1982 to 2021. The format from 2007 to 2021 is two letters plus four digits. The letters name the factory and the country. The digits give the week and the year. Example: SD 2145 means France, week 21 of 2015.

In March 2021 Louis Vuitton stopped stamping date codes on most leather goods. Those items carry an RFID chip. There is no visible code. A Speedy 35 sold as a 2024 or 2025 bag with a printed date code does not match the brand's production record.

Date codes sit under the interior pocket, on a leather tag sewn into a seam. Check the font, the depth of the stamp and the tag material. Fakes use flat ink, uneven spacing and tags that feel like plastic.

2. Heat stamp

The heat stamp reads "LOUIS VUITTON" and "made in France" (or Spain, or the USA). Letters are crisp and pressed into the leather, not printed on top. Look at the O. On authentic stamps the O is round, not oval. The letters sit on one baseline with even gaps.

3. Hardware

The Speedy 35 uses brass hardware: a top zip, two handle rings, four rivets and a padlock. Rivets carry a clean "LOUIS VUITTON" engraving. The padlock is numbered and comes with two keys. Fakes show shallow engraving, chrome plating that flakes, and a padlock that does not lock.

4. Canvas and vachetta

Monogram canvas is a cotton base with a coated surface. It has a faint sheen and a dry touch. Counterfeit canvas is PVC, smells of plastic and reflects light. The monogram print should sit square to the bag's edges with no stretched or cut LVs at the seams.

Handles are untreated vachetta leather. New vachetta is pale. It darkens to a honey tone with use and shows water spots. Fakes ship with pre-darkened or sealed handles that never change color.

5. Stitching and pattern

Stitch lines run straight and even. Ends are backstitched. The stitch color on monogram canvas is a mustard tone. Fakes use white thread, long stitches and loose ends.

6. Speedy 35 specs

  • Size: 35 x 23 x 18 cm (13.8 x 9.1 x 7.1 in)
  • Two rolled vachetta handles
  • Top zip with padlock and keys
  • Interior: brown textile lining, one flat pocket
  • No shoulder strap on the standard Speedy 35. Straps appear on the Speedy Bandouliere 35.

Compare these numbers to the listing. A "Speedy 35" that measures 30 cm is a Speedy 30.

What a photo cannot show

Photos hide weight, smell and leather feel. A bag needs a hands-on check for canvas grain, hardware weight and stamp depth. Third-party authenticators use trained inspectors and microscopes. No single detail proves a bag is real. The full set does.
