Short answer

A pre-owned Louis Vuitton bag sold with the words "1:1," "mirror," or "AAA" is a replica. Louis Vuitton does not use those grades. Genuine pre-owned bags get checked on four points: the date code or RFID chip, the heat stamp, the hardware, and the stitching. Price is a second filter. A bag that retails above $2,000 on the brand site does not sell pre-owned for $250.

Date codes ran from 1982 to March 2021

Louis Vuitton stamped date codes inside bags from 1982 to March 2021. Formats changed over the years. The later standard used two letters for the factory and four digits for the week and year. SD 0196 means France, week 1, 1996. Counterfeiters copy the same short list of codes. Two different bags with one code is a stop sign for a buyer.

The chip replaced the stamp in 2021

Since March 2021, most Louis Vuitton bags carry an RFID chip in the lining. The chip needs a dedicated reader. A phone app will not read it. Buyers cannot confirm the chip at home, so a 2022 or 2023 listing that shows a "date code" is a fake, not a rare find.

Heat stamp and hardware

The heat stamp reads LOUIS VUITTON in capital letters with "made in France," "made in Spain," or "made in USA" below it. Letter height and spacing are even. Fakes show a wrong font, uneven pressure, or "made in China" on canvas. Hardware on real bags is brass with a dull gold finish. Engraving is sharp and sits on one line. Fake hardware feels light, sticks to a magnet, and flakes at the corners.

Canvas, stitching, and dust bags

Louis Vuitton does not sell its canvas to other companies, so every piece of monogram canvas comes from the brand. Fakes show blurred print, logos cut by a seam, and gaps where the pattern repeats. Stitch runs on real bags are even across the whole piece. Fakes show puckering, knots, and loose thread. A dust bag is not proof of anything. Counterfeit sellers ship them with the bag.

Price floors

Louis Vuitton lists the Neverfull MM above $2,000 on its US site. Genuine pre-owned Neverfull MM bags sell in the hundreds, not in the tens, and the gap from retail reflects year and wear. Listings at $100 to $300 for a full-size canvas bag point to a replica. A large discount is not a sale. Louis Vuitton holds no outlet sales and no clearance events.

Legal status in the US

Buying a counterfeit for personal use is not a federal crime in most cases. Selling one is. Under 18 U.S.C. § 2320, trafficking in counterfeit goods carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for a first offense. Louis Vuitton sues resellers under the Lanham Act, and statutory damages reach $1,000,000 per counterfeit mark per type of goods, or $2,000,000 for a willful violation. U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit shipments, and the personal-use exemption does not cover them.

Steps before you pay

  1. Ask for photos of the date code or chip location, the heat stamp, the zipper pull, and the canvas at a seam.
  2. Send the photos to a paid authenticator. Entrupy uses a microscope camera. Real Authentication and Legit Grails use human appraisers. Fees run $10 to $50.
  3. Compare the price with The RealReal and Fashionphile listings for the same model and year.
  4. Pay with a credit card or PayPal Goods and Services. Skip Zelle, wire transfer, and gift cards.
  5. Buy on a platform with its own check. eBay Authenticity Guarantee covers handbags at $500 and up. Poshmark uses the same threshold. Terms change, so read the current policy.
  6. Skip any listing with an authenticity card or a serial number card. Louis Vuitton issues neither.

Louis Vuitton does not authenticate bags

Boutique staff do not verify pre-owned pieces and do not issue letters. Any seller who claims a store confirmed the bag is describing a service the brand does not offer. Third-party authenticators are the option, and none of them are affiliated with Louis Vuitton.
