The short answer
A fake Louis Vuitton Alma BB is a counterfeit copy of a handbag Louis Vuitton released in 2010. The authentic Alma BB measures 9.3 by 6.9 by 4.5 inches. Copies sell for $30 to $400. The real bag costs about $2,000 at retail. US law bans the sale, import, and shipment of counterfeits, and Customs and Border Protection seizes parcels at the border.
What the authentic Alma BB has
- Monogram canvas, Epi leather, or Vernis leather body
- Rolled leather handles and a detachable shoulder strap
- Gold-tone brass hardware with the LV circle lock
- A padlock and two keys on Monogram and Epi versions
- One interior flat pocket and a textile or leather lining
Louis Vuitton replaced date codes with an RFID chip in March 2021. A bag made after that date with a leather date-code tab is a sign of a copy.
Common tells on fakes
- Monogram print that sits off-center or runs into the stitching
- Hardware that feels light, or LV engraving that is shallow and rough
- Handle leather with a plastic shine instead of untreated vachetta
- Stitching that skips or runs uneven along the curve of the flap
- Heat stamp with the wrong font, wrong spacing, or a missing made-in line
Stitch count is a weak test. Sellers repeat a claim that Louis Vuitton uses a set number of stitches per inch, but the count changes with the model and the year.
Price tiers for copies
Copy sellers use rough grades. A $30 to $60 bag has vinyl trim and printed canvas. A $100 to $200 bag copies the shape but uses mismatched hardware. A $250 to $400 mirror bag copies hardware stamps and lining. None come from Louis Vuitton, and none carry a warranty.
US law
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. A first offense by an individual carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine. Customs can seize and destroy counterfeit bags. Personal use draws less attention than selling, shipping, and importing.
Checks before you buy secondhand
- Ask for a receipt plus the box, dust bag, and lock set.
- Match the interior lining to the material Louis Vuitton used that model year.
- Compare hardware weight and engraving depth against a store display.
- Pay with a method that allows a chargeback.
- Use a paid authentication service before the return window closes.
