Short answer
A fake Hermes Evelyne GM fails in five places: the perforated H on the back panel, the saddle stitching, the blind stamp, the snap closure, and the strap hardware. The real bag measures about 33 cm wide, 31 cm tall, and 8 cm deep. US boutique price ran near $3,700 in 2025. Replicas sell for $120 to $600. Most replicas fail on the stamp and the stitching inside the strap.
What the Evelyne GM is
The Evelyne is a crossbody bag built from one piece of leather. Hermes released it in 1978. The design has no lining and no interior pocket. A perforated H sits on the outside back panel. The H is a vent, not a logo plate, and it lets air into the bag.
Three sizes exist: TPM (16 cm), PM (29 cm), and GM (33 cm). The current version, the Evelyne III, adds an exterior slip pocket on the back and an adjustable strap. Earlier Evelyne I and II versions do not have the pocket. Check which version a seller claims before you compare details.
Dimensions and materials
- Width: 33 cm (13 in)
- Height: 31 cm (12.2 in)
- Depth: 8 cm (3.1 in)
- Strap drop: adjustable, roughly 50 cm to 60 cm
- Leathers: Clemence, Epsom, Togo, Maurice, Barenia
- Closure: one press stud (snap)
- Hardware: palladium or gold-tone plated
Clemence is a pebbled calfskin with a matte surface. Epsom has a pressed grain and holds its shape. The Evelyne GM in Clemence slouches when empty. A replica in stiff leather that stands on its own is a warning sign.
The five checks
1. The perforated H
Count the holes and look at the edges. The cut edges on a real bag are clean and the leather around each hole is even. Replicas punch holes that are too large, too round, or unevenly spaced. The H shape is wider than it is tall on the real bag.
2. Saddle stitching
Hermes uses a two-needle saddle stitch with waxed linen thread. Each stitch leans at a slight angle and the thread sits above the leather. Machine stitching runs in a straight flat line and looks the same on both sides. Look at the strap ends and the strap anchor points, where most replicas show machine work.
3. The blind stamp
Hermes stamps the bag blind, with no foil. The stamp reads HERMES PARIS, MADE IN FRANCE. It also carries a date code (a letter inside a shape) and a craftsman number. A real stamp sits deep in the leather and stays readable at an angle. Replicas stamp shallow, use gold foil, or place the stamp in the wrong spot. Hermes does not use serial numbers and does not issue authenticity cards. A seller who ships a plastic card or a hologram tag is selling a counterfeit.
4. The snap closure
The Evelyne has a press stud. It does not have a zipper. A zipper on an Evelyne is an immediate red flag. The stud on a real bag closes with a firm click and the engraving is sharp and centered.
5. Strap and hardware
Hardware weight is the hardest detail to copy. Real palladium hardware has a cool tone and no yellow cast. Check the strap keeper, the buckle, and the rivets. Rivets on a real bag sit flush and the edges are rounded.
Price and market context
An Evelyne GM bought new from a Hermes boutique costs about $3,700 in the US. Resale runs $2,400 to $3,400 depending on leather and condition. A listing at $400 for a bag described as new is not a discount. It is a different product.
Legal note for US buyers
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit merchandise at the border and destroys it. Buyers risk seizure with no refund, and sellers face criminal charges. Hermes registers its trademarks with the US Patent and Trademark Office and enforces them.
Questions to ask a seller
- Which Evelyne version is this, I, II, or III?
- What is the leather name?
- Can you photograph the blind stamp at an angle?
- Can you photograph the strap anchor stitching close up?
- Is there a zipper anywhere on the bag?
Answers that dodge the stamp photo or the stitching photo are answers in themselves.
