A fake vintage Hermès Constance is a copy of the Constance shoulder bag built to pass as a 1960s to 1990s original. The word "vintage" in a listing is a claim about age, not a grade of quality. Hermès does not license any factory to make copies. Sellers use the word to explain worn edges, yellowed glue, faded stamps and hardware that does not match current production.

What the original bag is

Hermès launched the Constance in 1959. Catherine Chaillet designed it and named it after her fifth child. The bag has a front flap, an H shaped clasp and a fixed strap. Catalog sizes are 14, 18, 23 and 24 cm. Materials on older bags include Box calf, Veau Graine, porc skin, ostrich and crocodile. The clasp sits off center on the flap. The strap is one piece. It does not adjust.

Why the vintage label helps counterfeiters

Old bags differ from new ones. Stitch count per inch changed. Edge paint changed. Date stamps changed. Hardware changed from brass to plated alloys. A seller who claims "vintage" can point at any mismatch and call it age. That makes the label a shield against questions. It also makes the bag hard to price.

Details you can check

  • Strap: vintage Constance straps are fixed, stitched to the sides, with no buckle and no adjuster.
  • Clasp: the H is one solid piece. Screws sit on the inside of the flap, not on the face.
  • Gusset: one interior gusset on older sizes, with a slip pocket behind it.
  • Stamp: "HERMÈS PARIS" with the grave accent, struck blind into the leather, no foil.
  • Date stamp: letter codes appear on later bags. Bags from the 1960s can carry no date stamp.
  • Stitching: saddle stitch, two needles, one thread. Look for a slant, not a lock stitch chain.
  • Weight: a Box calf Constance 23 with hardware weighs more than its size suggests.

What the replica market looks like

Prices for replica Constance bags run from about $150 to about $1,200. Sellers at the low end post stock photos and ship from a warehouse with no return address. Sellers at the high end post measurement photos, weight photos and video of the clasp. None of that proves the leather is Hermès leather. None of it proves the bag is old.

Legal position in the US

In the United States, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize a shipment and destroy it. CBP can seize a personal shipment as well as a commercial one. A buyer who resells a counterfeit bag with a Hermès mark faces the same statute as the seller.

Checklist before you pay

  1. Ask for the measurement in cm, taken with a tape in the photo.
  2. Ask for a photo of the interior stamp in raking light.
  3. Ask for a photo of the strap attachment on both sides.
  4. Ask for the return address and the return window in writing.
  5. Compare the price to the stated condition. Low price plus "vintage" plus "no returns" is the common pattern.

What no listing can prove

Photos cannot confirm leather tannage or thread fiber. They cannot confirm the age of the hardware. A written claim of "vintage" from a reseller has no independent record unless a receipt or a repair invoice exists. When those records are missing, treat the age claim as unverified.
