Short answer
A fake Gucci shoulder bag shows flaws in five places: the leather serial tag, the stitching, the canvas alignment, the hardware, and the price. A new GG Marmont small shoulder bag sells for about $2,500 at Gucci stores in the US. An offer near $200 for that model is counterfeit.
1. Leather serial tag
Open the bag and find the small leather tab sewn to the interior lining. Genuine Gucci bags carry a serial number embossed on the back of that tab, in most cases two lines of digits. The number is pressed into the leather. Counterfeit tags use printed ink that sits on the surface and rubs off. Gucci has changed numbering formats several times since 2016, so a number alone does not prove a bag is real. Use a second check.
2. Stitching
Count stitches along one straight seam. Gucci runs about 6 to 8 stitches per inch with even spacing. Counterfeit bag seams show wavy lines, skipped stitches, and loose thread. Thread color matches the leather on genuine models.
3. Canvas alignment
On GG canvas models, the interlocking G pattern lines up along the seams and the base. The pattern does not cut through the edge of a flap. On the Ophidia line, the green-red-green web stripe has three bands of equal width. Most fakes run uneven bands with a wider red stripe.
4. Hardware
Gucci hardware is heavy, with clean engraving. The double G logo has two letters of the same size joined at the center. Fakes show shallow engraving, sharp edges, and light weight. Zipper pulls on genuine bags carry a maker stamp such as Lampo. A blank pull is a warning sign.
5. Price and packaging
Compare the asking price to the retail price listed on gucci.com. Resale for a bag in good condition runs 40 to 70 percent of retail. Prices below 20 percent of retail point to a counterfeit. Gucci dust bags use heavy cotton. A thin polyester bag with a printed logo is not original packaging.
What US law says
18 U.S.C. Section 2320 makes trafficking in counterfeit goods a federal crime. US Customs and Border Protection can seize counterfeit bags under 19 U.S.C. Section 1526, including a single bag bought for personal use. Buying a fake is not a federal crime in most cases. Reselling one is. eBay, Poshmark, The RealReal, and Mercari ban counterfeit listings. A seized bag has no warranty, no repair service, and no resale value.
Steps before you pay
- Ask the seller for photos of the serial tag, the interior, the zipper pull, the hardware, and the base.
- Refuse the sale if photos are missing. Blurred photos are a red flag.
- Run the bag through a paid authentication service. Entrupy and Real Authentication issue written reports.
- Buy from sellers who offer a return window and a written authenticity guarantee.
- For a local sale, meet at a Gucci store and ask staff to inspect the bag.
