Fake Dior bags: the short answer

A fake Dior bag is a bag that carries Dior trademarks, logos, or trade dress without permission from Christian Dior Couture. The term covers two groups. Counterfeits copy the logo and pass as Dior. Inspired bags copy the shape and carry no logo. Only the second group is legal to sell in the US. Counterfeit Dior bags are illegal to make, import, or sell under 18 U.S.C. 2320 and the Lanham Act.

Which Dior women's bags get copied

  • Lady Dior. Cannage quilting, D.I.O.R. letter charms, top handles. Released 1995.
  • Saddle. Curved flap, D stirrup clasp. Reissued 2018.
  • Book Tote. Embroidered canvas, square body, no clasp.
  • 30 Montaigne. Flap bag with a CD clasp.
  • Miss Dior, Caro, Bobby. Smaller models with chain straps or smooth flaps.

Dior lists these bags from about $2,400 to $7,000 in the US. Prices change each season. A Lady Dior medium sat near $6,500 in 2024. Counterfeits of the same models sell from $30 to $400. That price gap is the first signal.

How to spot a counterfeit

  1. Hardware. The charms on a Lady Dior hang from a D ring. Letter spacing on the charm is even. Plating shows no pits and no orange peel texture.
  2. Stitching. Count 8 to 10 stitches per inch on the handle. Tension stays even. No skipped stitches, no loose thread ends.
  3. Cannage. Quilted lines align across the flap and the body. Copies drift at the corners.
  4. Interior. Linings are leather or jacquard. Tag text is centered. Labels are sewn, not glued.
  5. Codes. A serial tag sits inside an interior pocket. Numbers follow the format for that year of production. Code lists are public, so a valid code proves nothing on its own.
  6. Smell and weight. Counterfeits use plastic-coated leather. Glue odor stays for months.

Price and resale

Dior does not authenticate bags for the public and does not repair counterfeits. A reseller can send a bag to a paid authentication service for about $20 to $50. Receipts, box, dust bag, and store tags raise the odds a bag is real. None of them prove it. A bag sold at 20 percent of retail is a counterfeit or stolen.

Law and customs

Under 18 U.S.C. 2320, trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual. Dior can also sue for damages under the Lanham Act. US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit goods at ports and destroys them. A buyer who imports a counterfeit loses the item and gets no refund.

Where to buy a real one

Dior boutiques, the Dior site, and authorized department stores. Resale sites with authentication programs are the second option. A seller who uses stock photos, asks for wire or gift card payment, or lists "1:1" or "mirror quality" is selling counterfeits. Report listings to the platform and to Dior.
