Short answer
A fake Chanel 22 Medium is only worth buying at the top of the replica market, roughly $300 to $700 in 2026. Below about $150 you get bonded leather that creases the wrong way, a chain that feels hollow in the hand, and a CHANEL letter plate with soft, shallow engraving. The 22 is mostly plain leather and metal, so there is nowhere to hide. No heavy quilting, no busy print, just proportion, drape, and hardware finish. That makes it harder to fake well than a Classic Flap, where pattern and texture give a bad maker some slack.
Know the real bag first
The Chanel 22 came out of Virginie Viard's Spring-Summer 2022 collection and has stayed in the line since. The Medium is the everyday size, about 39 by 42 by 8 cm, a slouchy hobo with a drawstring top, a chunky chain handle with a leather shoulder pad, and a metal CHANEL letter plate hanging from a short chain. Since 2021 Chanel has used a metal plate with an NFC chip in place of the old hologram sticker and authenticity card, so a listing that brags about "full set with card" is describing a detail that no longer matches current production.
What the leather should do
The smooth calfskin versions have a firm hand with a dull gloss, not a wet plastic shine. Press a thumb into the side panel on a real one and the leather springs back with fine, irregular grain lines. Rep leather at the mid tier either feels spongy and coated or stiff like a shoe upper. Ask for a short video of someone squeezing the bag, not just flat photos. Flat photos hide everything.
Five checks I run on a rep
- Chain weight and sound. The handle chain should feel dense and clink rather than rattle. Light, tinny links are the single most common giveaway when the bag sits on a table.
- Plating color. Gold tone on the real bag is warm and slightly muted. Rep hardware often runs yellow or brassy under daylight, which shows up fast in phone photos taken outdoors.
- The CHANEL plate. Look for crisp, deep lettering with even spacing between the A, N, E and L. Crooked spacing or letters that look laser-etched rather than engraved means a low tier factory.
- Drawstring channels and lining. The leather should slide through the channels without bunching. Interior stitching on a good rep is tight and consistent, with a clean heat stamp. Loose thread tails and glue residue near the seam are a no.
- Dimensions and slouch. Measure the bag. Reps commonly run 1 to 2 cm narrow or tall, which changes how the body collapses when you set it down. A Medium that stands up stiff and square is not cut right.
Price tiers, honestly
- Under $120: PU or split leather, stamped hardware, wrong proportions. Visible as a replica from a few feet away.
- $150 to $300: Real leather of some kind, decent shape, weak hardware and sloppy interior. Fine for photos, obvious in person to anyone who owns the bag.
- $350 to $700: Imported calfskin, plated hardware, correct plate engraving, accurate lining. This is the only tier I would consider.
- Above $800: Usually the same product as the tier below with a marketing markup. Ask what changed and expect a vague answer.
On sizing
The Medium is the size most people actually carry: laptop sleeve, water bottle, the usual daily load. The Small reads dressier and the Mini is a phone-and-wallet bag. If a seller lists a "Medium" with Small measurements, that is a listing error you can catch with a tape measure before you pay.
What the listings will not tell you
Hardware plating wears at the chain ends and the plate edges within a year of daily use, and no rep is exempt. "Mirror quality" is marketing copy, not a grade. Two bags from the same seller can come from different batches a month apart, so reviews from last season tell you little. The chip will not read, whatever the listing claims. And buying carries real risk: customs seizure, no warranty, no return path, and trademark law that does not care whether you knew. Treat the money as spent the moment you send it.
Bottom line
Go in knowing the Medium's real dimensions, the weight of the chain, and how the plate should look, and you can filter most bad listings from photos alone. If a seller cannot send a short clip of the bag being handled, keep looking.
