  • Trio, a three-compartment shoulder bag.
  • Ava, a rounded bucket crossbody.

How to tell a real Celine crossbody from a copy

  • Clasp: the Triomphe clasp repeats the chain-link motif of the Arc de Triomphe. On a real bag the two halves sit flush and close with one push. Copies show a gap, a rough edge, or a clasp that flexes.
  • Canvas print: real Triomphe canvas has hard edges on the monogram. Copies show bleed or a blur where ink meets the background.
  • Stitching: Celine uses short, even machine stitches. Copies use longer stitches and wavy rows. Look at the strap base, where the load sits.
  • Stamp: Celine leather goods are made in Italy. The inside stamp reads CELINE MADE IN ITALY with a serial number. Copies use the wrong font or no number at all.
  • Hardware: real clasps, rings, and feet have weight. Copies use plated pot metal. Check the D rings for flaked plating.
  • Price: Celine crossbody bags retail in the low thousands of dollars. An offer far below that range is a counterfeit or a fraud. Both end the same way for the buyer.

What the law says in the US

18 U.S.C. § 2320 covers trafficking in counterfeit goods. A first offense carries up to 10 years in prison and a $2,000,000 fine for an individual. The Lanham Act gives Celine a civil claim under 15 U.S.C. § 1114 and statutory damages up to $2,000,000 per mark per good when the use is willful. Customs law is separate. Under 19 U.S.C. § 1526, CBP seizes and destroys counterfeit imports, and there is no personal-use exclusion for counterfeits.

Enforcement numbers

CBP reported about 19,700 seizures of counterfeit and pirated goods in fiscal 2023. The combined manufacturer's suggested retail value came to about $2.1 billion. Wearing apparel and accessories is the largest category by seizure count. Celine goods fall inside that category. A stopped shipment means the money is gone.

Celine does not list a public authentication service for bags bought on the secondhand market. Paid third-party services such as Entrupy and Real Authentication use microscopy, image capture, and software to grade a bag. Report prices vary by service. A report is not a warranty.
