A fake Burberry bag counts as rare for three reasons: the counterfeit run was short, the source pattern was dropped, or the real model was sold in one country. Rarity in the counterfeit market copies rarity in the genuine market. It does not signal better quality. A scarce fake uses the same hardware and stitching as a common one.
The four Burberry patterns that get copied
- Check pattern. Registered in 1924. First used as trench coat lining.
- Vintage Check. The 1924 pattern in a lighter, washed finish.
- TB Monogram. Introduced in 2018. Thomas Burberry initials in an interlocking frame.
- Archive prints. Seasonal graphics used for one collection, then dropped.
Copies follow these patterns because buyers recognize them at a distance. A counterfeit maker needs one recognizable mark, not a correct one.
Why some fakes are rare
Japan-only licensed lines
Burberry Blue Label and Black Label were licensed lines sold in Japan. The license ended in 2015. Bags from those lines used check patterns and hardware that never appeared in the main collection. Counterfeits of Blue Label bags exist, and most came from small workshops because the lines were unknown outside Japan.
Retired labels
Burberry folded Prorsum, Brit, and London into a single label in 2016. Prorsum leather goods ran in small numbers. Any counterfeit of a specific Prorsum bag is a short run by default.
Single-season colorways
Burberry changes check colorways each season. A bag in a colorway from one season stops appearing in retail after that season ends. Counterfeiters stop production at the same time. Leftover stock is what makes one look rare today.
How to date a bag
- Read the interior label. Burberry bags carry a stamp of the brand name.
- Check for a serial number. Most Burberry bags made after 2010 have one on the back of the interior label. Older bags often do not.
- Inspect the check at the seam. On a genuine bag the pattern lines up across the seam. Most fakes do not.
- Weigh the hardware. Burberry uses solid brass on many models. Plated hardware is lighter.
Market numbers
Counterfeit and pirated goods made up about 2.5% of world trade in 2019, or near USD 464 billion, per the OECD and EUIPO. Clothing is the most counterfeited category. Burberry destroyed £28.6 million of unsold stock in its 2018 financial year, which removed inventory that often becomes the reference for fakes.
What rarity does not mean
A rare fake does not resell for more. It does not carry a warranty. It does not come with an authentication record. If a listing calls a Burberry bag rare, ask which pattern, which year, and which region. A seller who cannot answer those three questions has no basis for the claim.
