The short answer
Genuine Burberry check fabric is woven jacquard with a coated finish, which means the pattern has texture and depth. On nearly every fake, the check is printed on top of plain canvas, so it reads flat. Tilt the bag under daylight. A real one shifts slightly as the weave catches light. A printed one stays matte and looks faintly chalky. What Burberry canvas actually is
Most people mean one of two fabrics when they say Burberry canvas.
The classic beige check with black, red, and white lines has been a house signature since the 1920s, when it lined the inside of trench coats. It moved to the outside of bags in the 1960s and became the most copied pattern in the brand's history. Resale listings call it Haymarket Check or Nova Check. It is a woven jacquard, and older versions carried a light resin coating that gave the fabric a soft sheen.
The second is the TB monogram, introduced in 2018, which builds interlocking T and B shapes into a grid on a beige ground. It is also a coated jacquard. Both fabrics are heavier than they look, hold a crease briefly, and show a fine diagonal grain up close.
Six details that give a fake away
- Print versus weave. Run your thumbnail across the pattern. Woven check feels like fabric with a raised grid. Printed check feels like a smooth sheet with ink on it, and the ink often pools at the edge of each line.
- Color temperature. Genuine archive beige sits close to warm sand. Counterfeit batches tend toward a bright butter yellow or a cool, dusty gray, especially under store lighting.
- Line order and width. The check is built from stripes of fixed width in a fixed order. On fakes, the red line is often too thick, too thin, or shifted off center inside the black band.
- Pattern at the seams. Real panels are cut so the grid runs continuous across the body, the base, and the gusset. Cheap copies chop the pattern, so lines break near every join.
- Edge and piping finish. Look where the canvas meets the leather trim. Genuine assembly wraps cleanly with no exposed glue, no fraying, and no wobbling stitch line.
- Weight and hardware. A canvas tote should have some heft. Fakes use thin fabric and hollow, lightweight metal that rattles. Genuine hardware is solid, brushed, and engraved cleanly rather than stamped with a rough die.
Zoom in on the hardware and stitching
Hardware is where counterfeiters cut corners first. On a real bag, zipper pulls, rings, and buckles feel dense and cool to the touch, and any lettering is centered, level, and cut deep enough to catch your fingernail. On fakes the gold plate is thin, the letters drift off center, and the plating wears through within weeks at the corners.
Stitch density matters too. Genuine bags use small, even stitches with thread matched to the leather, and the back of the seam is as tidy as the front. I also check the strap where it folds into the bag, since that is where a rushed factory leaves loose thread or a lump of glue.
Labels, stamps, and what comes in the box
Burberry is quiet about paperwork. Most bags ship with a dust bag and a care card, not an authenticity certificate, so a listing that leans hard on a "certificate" is usually selling you theater. What matters is the stamp on the interior leather patch. It should be crisp, correctly spaced, and match the era of the bag. The wordmark changed with the 2018 rebrand, so an older bag with block capitals is not a fake by default.
Country of origin varies by collection and year, which is why the origin label alone rarely settles anything. Read it together with the style, the care card, and the item code on the tag. A code that does not match the model is a bigger red flag than a manufacturing country you did not expect.
Price is still the fastest filter
Current Burberry canvas styles retail in the four figures, and older pre-owned bags commonly sell from the low hundreds up to around a thousand dollars depending on condition and model. A "brand new, tags attached" canvas tote at ninety dollars is not genuine. Outlet sales and resale platforms do produce real discounts, but genuine markdowns rarely reach ninety percent off on a current style.
Where the fakes show up
Marketplace listings with stock photos and a seller who joined last month, pop-up shops on social platforms, and sites selling "mirror quality" or "mirror image" goods. The language is a giveaway. If a listing describes the item as a replica, a mirror bag, or a 1:1 copy, you are buying an unlicensed product, and US Customs can seize it at the border.
