No single detail proves a Balenciaga City is fake. The bag has been copied since it took off in the early 2000s, and the better counterfeits get the silhouette right. What they struggle with is the combination: soft lambskin, heavy aged brass, Lampo zippers, a correctly stamped metal plate, and an interior tag with a plausible style number. Check those five things and your odds of getting fooled drop fast.
The tells that show up first
- Leather that feels stiff, coated, or plastic. Real City leather is soft and matte with visible natural grain and light creasing.
- Hardware that feels light in the hand and looks bright yellow instead of a muted aged brass.
- Zippers with no Lampo stamp on the back of the pull, or zippers that catch and drag.

A heavier contrasting thread is one of the easiest things to catch in a photograph.
Hardware and the front plate
The metal plate above the front pocket should read BALENCIAGA in caps, often followed by a single letter that corresponds to the production season. Very early bags from 2001 to 2004 may not have a plate at all, so age matters here. Lettering should be crisp, evenly spaced, and cut into the metal rather than printed on the surface. Studs and rivets should feel solid and dense. Some bags from 2001 to 2005 have a notch cut into the rivet, and that notch disappeared in later years, so match the rivet style to the production year before you call something fake.
Zippers and leather pulls
Balenciaga used Lampo zippers on most Cities. Check the back of the zipper pull for the Lampo mark and run the zipper a few inches; it should move smoothly with a little resistance. The knotted pull should be the same leather and color as the body, not a stiff strip that has been glued or stapled into place. Off-color pulls or a zipper that binds are strong warning signs.
Interior tag and lining
Inside, expect a leather tag reading BALENCIAGA.PARIS with MADE IN ITALY below it, plus a style number. The classic City is most often listed as 084332, though numbers shift by season and hardware type. Pay attention to font, spacing, and how deep the stamp sits in the leather. The lining on most Cities is a plain black woven fabric. Satin, printed logos, or a loose mesh lining are not what you want to see.
Why photos are not enough
A flat image hides the things that matter most: weight, smell, and how the leather folds. If you are buying secondhand online, ask for close-ups of the front plate, the back of each zipper pull, the rivets, the interior tag, and the bottom corners. Sellers who dodge those requests are telling you something. Video or a live walkthrough is better than a dozen studio shots.
Pay for authentication when the money is real
Above a few hundred dollars, third-party authentication is cheap insurance.
